Today, we speak with Gavin Fraser, Founder and CEO of Small Planet Digital, an agency that specializes in mobile game and app development for mobile and tablet devices, particularly the iPhone and iPad.
What does “Made in NYTM” mean to you and your company?
It’s incredibly energizing to know that the mayor’s office is recognizing and supporting digital entrepreneurship as a critical economic engine in NYC.
“Made in NYTM” is helping to expand awareness in and out of NYC. It’s also providing infrastructure, giving shape to our community and helping it grow, which helps everyone. We can’t thrive as a company without a thriving tech community around us.
What can be done to maximize the “Made in NYTM” campaign?
Anything that increases the discoverability of NYC-based startups is a great help. So, please continue playing that matchmaker role, maintaining and growing the “Made in NYTM” database and promoting speaking opportunities. It all helps to create critical mass around our community.
What else can be done to promote early stage entrepreneurship in NYC?
Tax incentives may seem a little dry, but I can you tell that they’re dead sexy to young companies, where cash is precious. There used to be a federal program to stimulate job growth that gave us a $3,000 break on employer FICA for just about every new hire. A program like that for NYC taxes would be a huge boon for startups.
Where does your company fit in the ecosystem?
We’re a startup born and raised in Brooklyn. We work with clients and partners all over the world, but we honestly believe there is no better place for our company than New York City.
We certainly love everything that makes NYC vibrant and inspiring, but more specifically, the opportunities are here, the talent is here, the community is here and, thanks to initiatives like “Made in NYTM,” the economic development is here.
