A New York VC Spotlight: Matt Harris of Bain Capital Ventures

Matt Harris, Managing Director at Bain Capital Ventures, is more than his role at the venture capital and growth equity firm.

The Williams College alumni began his career in 1995, only a year after graduating, with Bain & Company in Boston, Mass., where he served as a consultant and associate to Bain Capital.  While there, he purchased a credit-reporting agency for $1.1 billion and a medical products distributor for $90 million.  Harris left Bain Capital in 1997, moving on to be the founding managing director of The Berkshires Capital Investors.  The venture capital fund kicked off business by investing $5 million in 12 companies, 8 of which are still successfully up and running.  The company has gone on to raise around $60 million and became a partner of Village Ventures.

Harris served as co-founder and managing general partner of Village Ventures.  The early-stage venture capital firm managed about $175 million and invested in the media and financial services sectors.  Harris left Village Ventures in February 2012, when he returned to Bain Capital Ventures, turning his focus to financial services companies.

He is always on the lookout for investment opportunities in payments, specialty lending, fin tech, asset management, trading systems and insurance.  Most of Harris’ investments aim to increase penetration of non-financial institutions into the financial services industry.

In his spare time, Harris preoccupies himself with military history and several non-profits, specifically the Williamston Theatre Festival.  He his married to Jessica Harris, the host and producer of NPR radio show “From Scratch, and enjoys reading with his wife and 2 children, and works to keep up with his pets — a dog, a cat and 2 goats.

On the NY financial-services sector:  “It is definitely a core strength of New York.  It is highly logical that New York, which is home to so many banks and investment banks, becomes a place where financial-service innovation takes place.”

On Village Ventures:  “It wasn’t really an idea that successfully scaled.”
