Today we talk to Alex White, CEO and Co-Founder of Next Big Sound, a company that provides analytics and insights on online music consumption and purchases.
What does “Made in NYTM” mean to you and your company?
“Made in NYTM” means that our business is proud to be based here! We started the company in Chicago, moved to Boulder for several years to get the company off the ground and then moved to NYC last year. We felt that the combination of the music industry and big data engineering talent from banks and hedge funds was unique to NYC, and that this intersection was the best place to build our music analytics business.
What can be done to maximize the “Made in NYTM” campaign?
In my 8 months of living here, the NY tech community seems fairly well-connected, but in order to really maximize the impact, there needs to be strong support from the city government, from large companies based here, universities and other players that are adjacent parts of the startup ecosystem. This will broaden the reach and exposure beyond the core startups and VCs that are well aware of the “Made in NYTM” campaign.
What else can be done to promote early stage entrepreneurship in NYC?
Central listing of events, a central database of open positions and regularly scheduled events are the foundational layer. Brad Feld has a great book about building entrepreneurial ecosystems and lists four main principles that must be followed in NYC:
1. Entrepreneurs must lead the startup community.
2. The leaders must have a long-term commitment (20 years +).
3. The startup community must be inclusive of anyone who wants to participate in it.
4. The startup community must have continual activities that engage the entire entrepreneurial stack (things like Techstars, ERA, NY Tech Meetup, etc.)
Where does your company fit in the ecosystem?
Next Big Sound is part of the Techstars community (CEO and Co-Founder Alex White is a mentor in the program), part of the big data ecosystem (early presenter at Big Data Meetup), part of the VC world (backed by IA Ventures in $6.5M series A financing) and part of the music scene (thousands of clients throughout the industry in NYC).
