Today, we speak with Jonathan Zabusky, CEO of Seamless, the nation’s largest online food ordering service, which allows users to order food for delivery and takeout from restaurants through their website or mobile apps.
What does “Made in NYTM” mean to you and your company?
Seamless was founded and is headquartered in NYC, so the “Made in NYTM” campaign hits close to home. Our company started as an idea from 2 hungry lawyers and over the last 14 years has grown to more than 300 employees and 2 million users, with additional offices in London and Salt Lake City. For many New Yorkers, Seamless is an important piece of day-to-day life and an equally important business driver for our NYC-based restaurant partners.
What can be done to maximize the “Made in NYTM” campaign?
Mayor Bloomberg has repeatedly shown his support for the NYC tech community. He even helped us officially open Seamless’ new headquarters in 2012. The “Made in NYTM” campaign will reach its potential by continuing to support the technological advancement and entrepreneurial spirit already taking place in New York. Meetups, mentoring sessions and conferences offer valuable opportunities for networking and business development and will inspire budding entrepreneurs from every industry – fashion to banking to food to enterprise tech.
What else can be done to promote early stage entrepreneurship in NYC?
Whether it’s a VC, one-week-old startup, legacy brand or a burgeoning blogger, it is vital that the campaign engages everyone who is interested in growing the tech community in New York. Support to grow and incentives to stay in New York need to be available and reliable in order for this ecosystem to thrive. The campaign helps to create a true community among startups and established companies, and I hope to see it spur mentorship and collaboration among NYC-based leaders, entrepreneurs and developers.
Where does your company fit in the ecosystem?
We have been a true NY venture in both our operations and services from day one. Seamless’ headquarters are, and have always been, in New York City, making us a consummate NY tech company. Having been founded in 1999, we certainly know all about the stages a startup tech company goes through in its path to success. Additionally, many of Seamless’ 4,000 corporate clients and 2 million consumers are in NYC, so Seamless literally fuels the city through the workday and feeds people at night with our consumer and corporate offerings.
