Today we speak with Peter Raymond, CEO of humancondition, a think and do tank that curates socially conscious solutions, solving problems at scale to create global change.
What does “Made in NYTM” mean to you and your company?
NYC is the center of the world for many of us, “If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere” – so make it here.
NYC is a tough environment, filled with contradictions. It is loud, crowded, lonely, expensive, fast, hot, cold, intense, vast, nuanced and thrilling. If this won’t test your mettle, nothing will.
What can be done to maximize the “Made in NYTM” campaign?
Make connections to traditional “Made in NYTM” businesses and models. There is so much to learn from walking the floor of a 60 year-old bakery or a industrial dry cleaner, or learning about how the MTA works. The ideas and opportunities are endless. We are creating a series of workshops that explore traditional business to provide inspiration and show the opportunities for new ideas or models.
What else can be done to promote early stage entrepreneurship in NYC?
Helping to roadmap an accelerated route to first customers or users: experienced mentorship on legal, insurance, HR, compliance, leasing, healthcare, incentives, technology road mapping, M&A, risk management. Every start-up goes through it; no need to reinvent the wheel every time. Why not make it easy to access and not a burden to slog through.
Where does your company fit in the ecosystem?
We are in the problem solving business. We are looking at new models and approaches to old and new problems. We help companies of all sizes and stages understand their social impact: we mentor, teach, consult and incubate. We touch the physical and the digital world and often are liaisons between the two. We help startups strategize, like a more mature organization, and grow in a responsible way. We are futurists: we engage in interdisciplinary and systems thinking to advise private and public organizations on such matters as diverse global trends, social needs, plausible scenarios, emerging market opportunities and risk management.
