Ok, so they’re not all officially co-working spaces, but real estate is expensive in this part of the world. Not that that ever stopped scrappy entrepreneurs from finding a Manhattan address where they could set up shop, where the price was right. And when it’s $0, well, now it’s time to work on that free lunch…
Wix Lounge – 235 W 23rd Street | 8th Floor (between 7th and 8th Avenue)
Wix is a bona fide co-working space, and absolutely free. They’ve moved to larger quarters, but the price tag hasn’t changed. A great place to walk in, plug in and get things done, whether you want to meet some people, or meet a deadline. Open 9-5, Monday-Friday.
SoTechie – 28 West 39th Street | 4th Floor
SoTechie is another co-working space, and you can come in and grab a free desk, literally, But it’s Fridays only. Still, a nice end-of-the-week respite from your local Starbucks, and the coffee is free. If you can’t wait until Friday, you can also purchase a day pass for $25.
Ace Hotel – 20 West 29th Street
The old stand-by, and while wi-fi is not an issue, finding a place to sit and plug in at the same time can be challenging. Get there early. Or, bring your own power strip and just watch how many new friends you make.
Pioneers Bar – 138 West 29th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenue)
Just down the street from the Ace Hotel, and plenty of seating and wi-fi to go around. Not to mention coffee, video games and craft beers (for later in the day), and Red Bull (for when you’re working into the wee hours). There is a limited menu, and you’re welcome to bring in your own food as well. Opens at noon.
Lincoln Center Public Space – 1881 Broadway @ 62nd Street
Contrary to popular misconception, there is life above the Flatiron District and tech community members who live in what anyone who refuses to venture above 14th Street considers to be the suburbs. Good news, UWSers: no reason to hang at the local Starbucks or Aroma to escape working from home. Lincoln Center maintains a public space with free wi-fi and lots of tables and outlets. There’s a wall of lush greenery, too, since this is, well, the suburbs, after all. Open Monday-Friday, 8 am-10 pm; Saturday and Sunday, 9 am-10 pm.
