March NY Tech Meetup: the Site’s Up and So Are the Startups

Camaraderie and relief was the sentiment that kicked off the March 2014 NY Tech Meetup, held at the Skirball Center on the NYU campus. Nat Westheimer kicked off the evening by offering condolences to Meetup’s official site, which was taken down due to DDoS attacks in the beginning of the month, and a round of applause erupted for Meetup due to their diligent resistance against the attacks (the hackers had demanded $300 – don’t they know New Yorkers better than that? Seriously!).

And now, on with the show:

1- VerbalizeIt

image verbalize it

A translation tech platform, Verbalizeit connects to over 18 thousand translators to translate your app into another language within 24 hours – including the marketplace description and listing. The service is aimed at mobile developers, who can import the string code of the app into the site and have it translated. Each translation includes a style guide to tailor the language results, depending on the client.

2- Collaborizm

Ever think about tackling a business idea or project, but found yourself in dire need of an engineer or designer? The site aims to expedite the collaboration process, matching like-minded individuals, depending on the skills required.

3- DigitalOcean

A cloud hosting service, the information is stored in unique virtual machines named “droplets,” which are hosted on SSD cloud servers for quick access. The company recently announced that they raised the $37M Series A.

The site is aimed at developers, and provides tools and tutorials to introduce developers to cloud services.

4- Peatix

image_10

A global event ticketing platform, Peatix provides event organizers with the tools to manage entry and ticketing for events of all sizes. Tickets are authenticated through a color coding system, randomly generated for the specific event.

5- Shodogg

Patented technology to deliver cloud-managed content to any screen, Shodogg’s screendirect technology allows for quick switching between media formats on the fly during presentations. So you can send any cloud content to any web enabled screen from any mobile device. Formats include Youtube videos, files on Dropbox, and Amazon cloud services. If you’re interested in developing for them, you can request the API here.

6- RentHackr

image_5

RentHackr allows you to find apartments through a social rating platform before they hit the general market. Use concise and simple criteria to find what you’re looking for, and keep tabs on specific locations so you can get notified when apartments become available.

7- to.be

image_12

The “hack of the month,” to.be, is an online studio space of sorts that allows you to make collages out of web content and turn it into a bizarre mural. The projects can be exported into shareable links or even screen-printed shirts, although the latter is up to you, whether it’s to be or not to be.

 8- Score Sync

image_6

Collaborative digital sheet music, preserving edits in real time, and bringing music composition into the 21st Century. The sheet music is generated through an XML file, which can be accessed by multiple users at the same time. “We’re going to integrate our front-end into their back-end.” With a description like that, they would have fit in perfectly at last month’s Meetup. And as @WhitneyFishman observed, Only at a nerd fest like @NYTM would there be so much excitement about “integrating our back end into your front end.” There’s that, too.

9- Ziggeo

image_9

An easy video recording and playback API, it debuted at the meetup and consists of just two lines of code. The service aims to be ideal for integrating video-based media into sites, including video profiles, video comments, video messages, and video reviews. Yup, just two lines of code.

 10- Sense Health

image_8

Ever wish there was a way to keep track with your doctor’s advice without having to visit the office multiple times? Sense Health aims to be the solution, marketing itself as “the simplest way to support patients between appointments.” It is a platform to provide patients with a tailored support plan, curating messages through health & wellness professionals to keep patients on track.
