Today we take a look at the state of venture capital and angel funding during the month of May, both in New York and nationally. Analyzing some publicly available data from our friends at CrunchBase, we break down the national aggregate statistics for all funding deals by stage of funding (Angel/Seed, Series A, Series B, and Series C+).

Key Takeaways:

The number of deals in New York and nationally both increased from March. The number of deals increased nationally in excess of 20%.  Aggregate funding was up both nationally and in NYC from March levels and deal sizes were significantly higher on average than 2013 levels.

Key Takeaways:

Series A deals fell nearly to half of March levels both nationally and in NYC in May with only 50 deals of which NYC comprised nearly 20%. However, average deal size was nearly double that of March levels nationally.  *It is important to note that NYC’s data is skewed by two extremely large A rounds raised by Oscar Health ($80M) and Mozido ($100M). When excluding these two outliers, the average A round in NYC in May was $8.78M.

The number of Series B deals nationally jumped more than 20% from March levels.  *It is important to note that NYC’s figures are heavily influenced by Flatiron Health’s massive $130M funding. When excluding that particular financing, the average Series B round in NYC was $13.3M.

Key Takeaways:

May did not share the same uptick in Series C+ fundings as in March.  Nationally, aggregate funding dropped over 40%.

Smartling closed a sizable D round just months after raising their C.

Key Takeaways:

There was a massive increase in total funding for both New York and the US in May from March data. Nationally, the number the increase in funding can be attributed to a near tripling in the number of deals. Of note, in New York aggregate funding more than doubled to close to $700M for the month with a 25% increase in the number of deals. This was aided by some very large rounds.
